The drifters at this point are still overall a huge success! Of the five launched, only one went under. They are still grouped together following the same current patterns, but are extremely different than the path of Wilson last year. Previously, Wilson went offshore and then went on a straight shot down the Florida coast and into the Gulf Stream. After being launched for three weeks, the drifters still haven't made it past St. Augustine. They have been wrapped in the same large eddy that is slowly moving the buoys down the coast. With each loop in the eddies, the drifters get closer and closer to shore. It is nail-biting but very interesting to see a new pathway this year. I have full hopes that this pattern will continue all the way south and the drifters make it to the Gulf Stream.
